What Is the Difference Between Stacked and Loose Volume?
Loose volume refers to the space taken up by logs when they are loosely loaded or poured into a container – this is the UK industry and legal standard. Stacked volume measures the space the logs take up when neatly arranged.
Because stacked logs are tightly packed, the stacked volume is typically more than a third less than loose volume. Knowing both measurements helps you choose the right amount you need for your space and appliance.

What Firewood Should I Choose?
Your perfect firewood depends on what you value most – easy lighting, long burn time or maximum heat.
Kiln Dried Ash Firewood: Known as the ‘King of Firewood’, ash offers a perfect balance of heat output, burn duration and ease of use. It is a great all-round option for wood burners, stoves, fireplaces, firepits, chimineas and campfires.
Kiln Dried Birch Firewood: Birch is extremely quick and easy to light and produces a bright, lively flame. While it has a shorter burn time than other hardwoods, it is perfect when you need instant warmth or a quick fire.
Kiln Dried Oak Firewood: Oak is known for its exceptional heat output and long, steady burns. It can take longer to ignite, but rewards patience with long-lasting heat and a classic, low-rolling flame. Oak is perfect for larger stoves, open fires, firepits or overnight burns.
Our Kiln Dried Premium Hardwood Firewood combines the best of all worlds. It lights easily and delivers a steady, long-lasting burn with excellent heat output. Our premium hardwood logs are debarked for cleaner handling and reduced ash – perfect for a range of indoor and outdoor use, including wood burners, stoves, chimineas, firepits and pizza ovens.
At White Horse Energy, all our kiln dried hardwoods are Ready to Burn certified and sustainably sourced. For more information on the firewood variants we offer, visit our Firewood Knowledge Base.
