Understanding Wood Density
and How it Affects Firewood Quality

What Is Wood Density and Why Does It Matter?
Wood density depends on how tightly packed the fibres of the wood are. In simple terms, its is the mass (weight) of cubic centimetre (g/cm³). Denser woods like oak and ash are heavier and contain more energy per log, so they burn hotter and for longer than lighter, less dense woods such as pine or spruce.
How wood Density Impacts Your Fire
- Longer Burn Time: Dense woods burn more slowly, giving you a longer-lasting fire and sustained warmth.
- Higher Heat Output: With more tightly packed fibres, dense woods have a greater energy content per log and deliver consistent, high heat.
- Cleaner Burn: Dense, dry logs produce less smoke and ash, making them better for the environment and easier to clean up.
- Better Value: Because they burn hotter for longer, dense logs offer more heat for your money.

Moisture Content: The Other Half of the Equation
Density is key, but it isn’t the only factor in firewood quality - moisture content is equally important. Even the densest log won’t burn efficiently if it’s too wet. That’s why all our kiln dried and sun dried logs are dried to below 20% moisture and certified Ready to Burn, guaranteeing a clean, efficient burn every time.
Wood Density and Firewood Types
Here’s how some of our most popular firewood stacks up:
- Sun Dried Premium Hardwood:* 625 kg/m³
- Kiln Dried Premium Hardwood:* 500 kg/m³
- Kiln Dried Oak: 450 kg/m³
- Kiln Dried Ash: 430 kg/m³
- Kiln Dried Birch: 400 kg/m³
*At White Horse Energy, we source our Premium grade hardwood firewood by density, so while the species may vary, you’ll always get a highly dense, top-performing firewood.
Choosing the Right Wood Density for Your Needs
The best wood density for you depends on how you prefer to use your firewood. If you want long-lasting heat, go for denser hardwoods like our Premium Hardwood, Oak, Ash, or Birch. For quick bursts of heat - like when you’re getting a fire started - lower density softwoods such as pine or spruce are a great choice. They ignite quickly and burn fast, but they produce less heat overall and may leave behind more residue.
The White Horse Energy Difference
Choosing the right firewood can transform your home heating - making it warmer, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly. Why settle for less? At White Horse Energy, our kiln dried oak, ash, birch and premium grade logs are chosen for their superior density and burn quality and expertly dried for optimal performance. Can we help?
Choosing the Right Wood Density for Your Needs
The ideal wood density for firewood depends on your specific needs and preferences. For instance, if you prioritise long-lasting heat, denser woods such as our Ecoblaze Premium Hardwood, Oak, or other hardwoods such as Ash or Birch are excellent choices.
For quick bursts of heat, such as when you’re starting a fire, lower density softwoods like pine or spruce are more a better choice.
