Tips for Storing Firewood

Ideally, firewood should be stored outside. Storing large quantities indoors can attract pests and introduce excess moisture into your home.

• Choose the Right Spot

  
  
  • Find a dry, ventilated area close to your home.
  • Avoid stacking directly against a wall, which can trap moisture and promote mould.
  • Elevate your wood pile a few inches off the ground using a log rack or pallet to prevent rot.

• Stack it Properly

  Correct stacking allows airflow between the logs, which helps them stay dry. Follow these firewood stacking tips:

  • Stack logs in neat rows with the bark side up to help shed rainwater.
  • Leave gaps between the logs to allow for air circulation.
  • Limit stack height to around 1.2 metres (4ft) for safety and stability.

  Your firewood needs to stay dry while still being able to breathe. A wood store or log shelter is the ideal solution, especially in the UK’s unpredictable weather.

  If you don’t have a log store, a breathable firewood cover or tarpaulin will work. Cover the top of the stack to protect it from rain and snow, leaving the sides open for airflow. Avoid wrapping your firewood completely in plastic or non-breathable material – this traps moisture and causes the logs to rot.

  You can store a small amount of firewood inside the house for convenience. But only bring in what you will burn within a few days, as storing large quantities indoors can invite insects and affect your home’s air quality.
