Hardwoods come from deciduous trees – those that shed their leaves annually – such as oak, ash and birch. These species grow slowly, resulting in denser, heavier wood with a tight grain. This density is what makes hardwood so effective as a heat source.

Softwoods come from coniferous trees, such as pine, spruce and fir. These trees grow faster, resulting in a lighter, less dense wood with a looser grain. While softwood ignites quickly and is useful as kindling, its advantages are limited when it comes to home heating:
