Five Books for Fireside Reading

Five Books for Fireside Reading

Nothing can beat the blissful feeling of curling into a fireplace armchair with a book. To experience this for yourself, we not only provide you with firewood, but we also provide you with book recommendations too. Here are five that particularly stand out to us.

1. Rebecca, by Daphne Du Maurier

A classic gothic tale that captures the danger of jealousy. While working in Monte Carlo, the nameless female protagonist meets Maximillian De Winter, the rich widower who owns Manderley house. They fall in love, marry, and move to his country home, but their wedded bliss doesn’t last long, as the memory of Rebecca lingers in the house, and is kept alive by Rebecca’s loyal housekeeper Mrs Danvers. The new wife is only ever known as the 2nd Mrs De Winter, reflecting that she stands in the shadow of the previous wife. The mystery behind Rebecca and her death unfolds to reveal the true nature of her relationship with Maximillian.

2. Good Omens, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

A supernatural comedy of the incoming end times. The fate of the world rests in the hands of a little boy named Adam who also happens to be the antichrist, but he doesn't know it. The charm in this story comes from the unusual friendship between the Angel Aziraphale and the Demon Crowley, who were there when the Earth was created, and garden of Eden bloomed, and now live like humans in modern-day London city. They have grown to love life on earth away from their respective parallel realms, much to the distaste of their unearthly superiors. Aziraphale and Crowley, are determined to find the boy and prevent Armageddon between heaven and hell.

3. Little Fires Everywhere, by Celeste Ng

This domestic drama follows the convoluted relationship between the Richardson family and the Warren family. It starts in the present, where the Richardson’s house is set on fire and their daughter Issy has run away and then shifts into a flashback leading up to the event. Mia Warren and her daughter Pearl move into the Richardson’s rental home in Shaker Heights, where Pearl befriends Elena Richardson’s son Moody and then meets his whole family. Mia, feeling concerned about Pearl’s growing fixation with them, takes on a role as a cleaner in their home to keep a closer eye on Pearl. Mia’s undisclosed secrets and disregard for suburban life creates conflict with Elena, who seeks to expose her past.

4. Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury

Bradbury offers an astute commentary on the progression, or the collapse, of society in this dystopian novel. In a world where books are burned and all information is consumed on a shallow level through screens, the main character Montag meets individualist Clarisse who helps him to see the emptiness of their current lifestyle and goes from being a firefighter who burns books to a rebellious book reader who wants to change the system and lives around him. If you’re looking for a reason to start reading more books, then the message of this book will certainly persuade you.

5. In The Woods, Tana French

If you’re a fan of gritty crime novels set in the woods, this is for you. It starts with an incident 20 years ago in Ireland, where Adam and his two friends wander into the Knocknaree woods. The friends go missing, and days later Adam is found clinging to a tree with blood on his shoes, traumatised. In the present, Adam has changed his name to Rob and works as a detective. When the murder of 12-year-old Katy Devlin takes place in the very same woods and Rob is tasked with solving it, links are made between both cases which dredge up the memories he’d suppressed. With less of a neat ending, this book poses more as an insight into Irish culture and the themes of trauma rather than a mystery that gets wrapped up with a bow.
