How To Repurpose Your Hessian Firewood Bags
Hessian – made from the jute plant – is a versatile material that we use to create our Ecoblaze Hessian Firewood sack. But once you’ve emptied the bag, what do you do with it? We’ve got a few ideas on how to repurpose the fabric, with something to suit everyone.
1. Additional Storage/Packaging
Add some charm to your interior design while using minimal tools, or none at all. The 60 litre bags come in handy for those items you’re keen to keep out of the way, such as the laundry or your kids’ toys. Paint a design onto the fabric to give them a modern touch or leave natural to embrace the farmhouse aesthetic.
2. Reupholster Your Furniture
When you want to preserve those excellent furniture frames but give it a fresh look, try replacing tired, old fabrics and make that worn armchair into a home feature to be proud of. Hessian works well when added to your dining furniture, as it can also be paired with simple hessian table decorations. Make sure you have a toolkit containing things like needle nose pliers, screwdrivers and pins so that you can carefully remove the old covers and tack down the hessian. The material stays intact under tension and will last well over time. A staple gun will help you to secure the hessian fabric to the seat, while also sealing the edges to prevent fraying. And if you’ve made the move to a full firewood crate after trying the ecoblaze Hessian firewood bag, why not continue storing logs in the bag? That’s what Becca – otherwise known as @themakingofno.17 on Instagram – says that she’s been doing, to keep an extra
supply of logs closer to her wood burner. Becca says that she would also love to “use the hessian to craft some cute little pantry bags” as a receptacle for potatoes and other vegetables. This is ideal for storing potatoes especially, as it allows them to breathe and for moisture to escape, meaning they’ll keep for a long time.
3. Dog & Cat Beds
Make something simple that your pet will love. All you need is comfortable, animal friendly bedding, a zipper to attach, and your sewing kit or sewing machine to put it all together. When filling the hessian bag, opt for an old pillow, old clothes or some foam bedding that is cut to size. Sew on the zipper so that you can remove the bedding and clean the outer hessian layer (hessian should only be hand washed with cold water and a gentle soap), and voila – a dog or cat bed that has texture and durability. Even the clumsiest of crafters can have a go at this.
For any party or occasion, bunting always sets the scene. If you’re the type of person that likes to organise everything, from the catering down to the decorations, then you’ll love this little crafting idea. The essentials for making this are twine/ribbon, scissors, pins, and a glue gun. Cut down the sides of the bag to create one long strip of hessian fabric. Make reinforced bunting by folding your hessian length ways and draw flags along the folded edge. Pin them in place to keep their shape before customising them. Once you’ve done this, remove the pins and unfold them. Place string or ribbon across the fold of each flag. Apply hot glue along the edges and just below the fold on one side. Refold, and your bunting is ready.
There are so many ways you can incorporate hessian into your gardening. The best way to make use of it is by creating breathable grow bags, for herbs and vegetables to flourish. Simply keep the bag as is to make one huge container for plants or make smaller ones by cutting out smaller layers to stitch together. You’ll need your sewing kit for this. Before sewing the hems remember to pin the edges together to keep your stitching neat. The fabric makes it easy to remove and put in new plants while its porous nature allows the water to drain through. Other uses for gardening include putting it on flower beds to control weed growth and covering plants to protect them from frost during the winter.
