Christmas Eve Check List

Christmas Eve Check List

It’s not long until Christmas, and in between frantically wrapping presents, chopping up veg and defrosting your turkey, here are seven entertaining things to do before that fat bearded man in red tries to fit down your Defra approved wood burner flue (ouch).

1. Wear Your Ugliest Festive Jumper!

Because nothing says ‘Christmas’ quite like a fashion disaster. For those of you not particularly bothered about Christmas jumpers, a bit of tinsel round the shoulders will do. You can absolutely just pop to Tesco and buy a jumper in the sale if you want, but if you thought this holiday was all about looking your best, then it's time face some cold, hard truths.

2. Light The Fire

Set the mood with a slow burning fire in your log burner and make your living room look like a Christmas greeting card. We recommend choosing a long-burning fuel such as Oak firewood so that you can enjoy the firelight and warmth during the evening without having to refuel as often, letting you focus on your other tasks. All you need to achieve the first flames in your log burner are a few pieces of kindling and one firelighter. Oak firewood is energy dense enough to carry on heating up the room for hours after.  Oak is also THE firewood type to burn at this time of year, harking back to Yuletide traditions in Norway with the Yule log burning up until the Winter solstice.

Imagine sipping a Hot Toddy next to that glow – bliss. And don’t forget that you can add another log every few hours if you want to keep the fire burning the entire day (which means you can even take off that ugly Christmas jumper... if you really must). Order some here.

3. Put Some Music On

Music lifts the spirits, especially during the season where people are warding off the winter blues. Now, we won’t judge you for your music tastes – if you wish to listen to Mud while slow dancing with your nan, then go for it. Engage all the senses by combining some soft music with the rich aromas of Christmas. But you can’t rock around the Christmas tree without a little Brenda Lee.

4. Decorate The House (if you haven’t already)

For those who easily get bored with the décor before the 25th, now you can put up the tree and other house decorations. Adorn your house with tinsel, baubles, wreaths and garlands. In fact, we’ve written about a few ways to make your own decorations, if you have time. The smell of fresh pine and the shimmering ornaments will make your home feel magical.

5. Play Some Board Games

Uncle Pete is snoring loudly into his eggnog and the kids are fighting over the TV controller, so it’s time to dust off those board games that you bought last Christmas and haven’t played since, to bring some peace to the household. Game of Trivial Pursuit anyone? (Side note: If you’re playing Cluedo or Monopoly, you’ll definitely need that Oak firewood in your wood burner – you're going to be sitting there for a while.)

6. Hang Stockings

Once the kids have gone to bed, obviously, you can fill the stockings and hang them carefully on the mantelpiece. For the crafty folk with a few hours spare, see our home-made decorations article mentioned above for some simple points for stitching your own stocking together. A Christmas fireplace setting isn’t complete until the stockings are hung.

7. Pour a Drink... For Yourself

As far your children are aware, Santa takes a liking to which ever drink you happen to like as well. Funny that! Now is the best opportunity to try out some more wintry themed drinks. For example, you could try one of these five winter cocktails we wrote about earlier this month. Now it’s time to kick back and watch the last few flames in your wood burner die out. Then it’s up to bed, ready for tomorrow...

All that’s left to say is... we hope you have a warm and happy Christmas, and we look forward to seeing you in the new year.
